There are varying reasons that adults will end up succumbing to tooth loss at some time in their lives, either as a result of accident or a disease process. There are various alternatives to tooth replacement such as removable dentures or fixed bridges.

For many years, these alternatives were the only procedures available; however, implants are now a very desirable choice for tooth replacement as a result of their stability and natural appearance.

We are glad to now have the ability to offer the surgical placement and restoration of the final crown performed entirely within our office. This allows for the seamless delivery of the procedure and enhances communication between the Dental Implantologist and Restorative Dentist.

Dental implants consists of three portions; an anchor which is implanted into your jaw, a post which is used to attach a prosthetic tooth and the porcelain crown. The implant is specially coated with a material which assists bone in adhering to it. The implant is surgically placed directly into the bone and it is allowed to integrate over a period of 4 – 6 months during which time bone will grow around it and will ensure its permanent attachment. Once the implant is fully integrated with the bone, an artificial tooth (porcelain fused to metal) is secured to the implant either via screw attachment or cementation.

Case selection is extremely important when it comes to implants. Not all patients have sufficiently healthy gums or bone structure to support an implant. This determination is generally made at the time of consultation with the general dentist and implantologist. It is important to be in good health and to be fully committed to meticulous oral hygiene and to have regular dental visits including professional scaling and polishing.
