Until recently, you were able to count a person's fillings simply by taking a look in their mouth. The dark areas marking silver amalgam fillings were very obvious. This is not the case any longer. Advances in dental technology are making the silver mouth a vision of the past.
There is a new, natural looking type of filling that matches the colour of the remaining tooth that is being filled. Research shows that these materials rival the strength and beauty of natural tooth structure. The tooth coloured material will not stain and works well even with large cavities. Inlays and onlays are especially well suited for restoring areas near the back of your mouth where chewing is high stress or there is little original tooth left.
There are other advantages too. Unlike silver fillings, inlays and onlays don't require removal of large amounts of tooth structure - we only have to remove the damaged portion of the tooth.
Inlays and onlays have a much more accurate fit. They are custom designed for each patient in a laboratory using a precise replica of your tooth. Inlay and onlay treatment usually takes a couple of appointments but with proper brushing and flossing, they'll last up to fifteen years.
Inlays appear virtually identical to natural teeth
