Your Smile & You

If your teeth have lost their pearly white, youthful appearance you are not alone. Aging, diet, and injuries along with many other factors cause teeth to dull and yellow. Teeth whitening has become a popular dental service at our dental office. Teeth whitening is safe, fast and effective.

Some of the stains that can benefit from whitening include:

  • Yellow coloured stains whiten well
  • Coffee, tea, wine, soft drinks, curry, blue berries and tomato stains
  • Natural aging – the dentin underneath the enamel of a tooth darkens with age
  • Smoking or any tobacco stains

Stains that may not respond well to whitening include:

  • Teeth tinged with brown or gray tones may be unresponsive to teeth whitening
  • Crowns, bonding materials or tooth-coloured fillings – if these materials appear on visible sections of your smile, tooth-whitening procedures may cause them to stand out against your natural teeth)
  • Accidents – a dead nerve will darken a tooth
  • Root canal therapy
  • Medications taken during the formation of teeth (tetracycline antibiotic)
  • Fluorosis of the teeth (mottled white or brown spots)

What is Tooth Whitening?

Tooth whitening can be a very effective and safe way of lightening the existing colour of your teeth without removing the tooth surface. The whitening gel used is carbamide peroxide. As the carbamide peroxide is broken down, oxygen gets released into the enamel on the teeth to break down the yellow coloured protein stains on the teeth, resulting in whiter teeth. The two types of professional-strength whitening that we offer are:

In-Office Whitening

This is the quickest and most dramatic way to whiten your teeth. Because this procedure is supervised in a dental office, a stronger bleaching solution can be used than what's found in home kits. A rubber shield will be initially applied to protect your gums, afterwards, the whitening gel will be applied to your teeth for approximately 1 hour. The total time required to apply the protective shield and whitening gel is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The teeth should end up a few shades lighter unless you have teeth that are very resistant to whitening.

Take-Home Whitening

Custom made bleaching trays are fabricated to exactly fit your teeth. You have the flexibility to go as white as you like with these trays as the more you wear them the whiter your teeth will become in as little as 1 – 2 weeks. The trays are filled with whitening gel and are worn on your teeth for 30 minutes every day until you reach your desired shade. The trays can be worn again whenever you feel your teeth need brightening up, perhaps before a holiday, party or a wedding.

How Long Will My Teeth Stay Whiter?

The effects of whitening last approximately three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth.

Can a Single Tooth, Which Has Been Root Filled, Be Whitened?

Yes. Sometimes dead teeth go discoloured after a root filling. If the tooth has been root treated, the canal (which contained the nerve) may be reopened. The whitening product is applied from the inside to whiten the tooth. If your dentures, removable retainers or night guards are stained or discoloured, bring them in and we will clean them for you.

What Are the Side Effects?

Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment. The LumiSmile bleaching gel is formulated to minimize sensitivity.
